  • Has Charlotte Bartlett Solved Second Life’s First-Time User Challenge?

    July 29, 2025

    SL first time user solution

During a recent update meeting about Project Zero, Second Life's new cloud-streaming option, Linden Lab asked community members for ideas to improve new user onboarding, which remains the virtual world's most vexing, unsolved problem. I.E., roughly 99% of new user sign-ups never, ever return.

But then Charlotte Bartlett of Scarlett Creative posted this detailed onboarding proposal to the official Feedback site, and it's one of the best group of ideas I've ever seen. You should go here to read the whole thing and consider giving it an upvote, but it's so good, I'm excerpting it at length here:

  • Cajsa’s Choices: In Praise of Dalton Keynes, Sui Generis Second Life Photographer

    July 29, 2025

    Dalton Keynes flickr

Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting

Dalton Keynes is a Second Life photographer and it shows in the consistent quality of his pictures. What really draws me to his stream, though, is how well his pictures suggest a full life beyond just the head and body of an avatar. There are sensations transmitted via the pixels.

Take “Ripples,” for example. In this picture I see the cool relief of the water in a pool after a hard day. His shirt is still on, suggesting he was urgently in need of the relief. His eyes are closed because that’s what we humans do when we experience that kind of relief. This picture tells us something about the man, a little vignette of life.

  • Dual Universe MMO Due to Close Next Month; May Re-Launch As User-Run Open Source World

    July 28, 2025

Dual Universe Beta Launch Single Shard Metaverse

Well this is seriously sucky news:

Today, we are announcing the closure of the Dual Universe MMO server. It is with a heavy heart from all of us here on the Dual Universe team and at Novaquark to tell you that the Dual Universe MMO server will be sunsetting on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025 at 14:00 UTC.

Longtime readers will remember how excited I was about Dual Universe, at least in terms of its technical and conceptual ambition. In ancient times (by which I mean 2018), I was even vibing on the possibility that Dual Universe was the closest to becoming the Metaverse with a capital M.

I'm reaching out to lead creator J.C. Baillie, to find out what happened. The project was originally funded as a successful Kickstarters with over 8000 backers, so I thought it would (at minimum) succeed as an Eve Online-like niche MMO. Then again, Eve is still going relatively strong, as is Star Citizen. My general rule of thumb is still that science fiction-themed MMOs rarely get massive; the only one that's attracted over 1 million subscribers was Star Wars: The Old Republic. (Which is, you know, Star Wars; also, even that MMO quickly lost that subscriber base.) Raph Koster has told me that he's done surveys suggesting there is a demand for sci-fi-themed MMOs, but the jury's still out on that question — we'll have another proof point when Raph's Stars Reach officially launches.

Anyway, there is a hopeful glimmer in the impending death of Dual Universe — it may be revived as an open source community project:

XR headsets not mass market why"The biggest barrier to market adoption is not perfect realism, but use case matching. The technology companies are trying to foist a model of all day use upon VR, whereas my research indicates that it is not a medium for daily use, but best one reserved for special experiences." • What’s the Most Innovative New-ish Second Life Experience on the Grid?

    July 25, 2025

    Bad Unicorn SL sim SLurl

I want to highlight new-ish Second Life experiences that are highly innovative! Are there any that you haven't seen covered in New World Notes or elsewhere? Please post details (SLurl, website, social media) in Comments!

By "new-ish", I mean (roughly) experiences that were uploaded to the virtual world since 2020 or later. By "innovative", I mean experiences that use the Second Life platform and all its affordances (including scripting, physics, and web hooks) in inventive ways. I.E., not just a beautiful-looking sim. For instance, Bad Unicorn's new mainstore is not only cool looking, but comes with a whole fun theme park/party space, where SLers can play various goofy competitive games, win prizes, and get their name on the sim's giant leaderboard — sorta Second Life meets Fall Guys.

In recent years, SL experiences/sims have been much more focused on looking gorgeous, which is great, but I'm thinking back to classic creations, like Svarga's self-contained ecosystem, and the four dimensional Crooked House, and wonder if we'll see new projects which reach that level of ambition.

However! It's quite possible I've just missed some of them. If so, please include details in Comments below.

  • Cajsa’s Flickr Picks: Second Life Tributes to the Late, Great Ozzy Osborne

Ozzy RIP tribute Second Life pics

Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting

Schickzal Destin was one of the several people who shared their grief over the death of Ozzy Osbourne on Second Life Flickr. This was my favorite simply because the Ozzy avatar is in such an Ozzy position with his arms up and outstretched. It’s how I always think of him thanks to his ubiquitous celebrity. Heavy metal has always been popular in Second Life and there were Black Sabbath tribute bands over the years, like this one from 2014.

  • VRChat Community Keep Creating Sisyphean Monument Into Virtual Sky

    July 23, 2025

Though learning about it last week, I continue to be obsessed with Monument, a VRChat-based world where tens of thousands of players (so far) have volunteered to build a massive Babel-like tower in real time, brick-by-brick, vaulting incrementally into the sky. (World's web page here.)

Igbar Von Squid was so impressed, he created the fairly hilarious recruitment video above, seeking other players to help with the collective labor. When he first discovered it on social media, Igbar fell in love it with on an existential level:

"There is no practical point to building the Monument," as he puts it, "no reward, and not even an end goal. In fact it only gets more difficult the taller it gets! And yet, at any given time of day there are always several hundred people working on it for no other reason than because they simply feel like it.

"It calls to mind the ending line of Camus' famous essay, 'The Myth of Sisyphus': 'The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy'."

Other VRChat players who join him on the tower seem to feel the same way:

  • Second Life Users Are Asking ChatGPT to Turn Their Avatars Into IRL Selfies and the Results Are Amazing

    July 23, 2025

Stephy Renee'ChatGPT RL SL avatar selfie

So ChatGPT is highly problematic for many multiple reasons, the very least of which being it still can't summarize my book accurately, but as is often the case, the Second Life community has leveraged it for pretty amazing results. Specifically, turning their SL avatar into a RL social media selfie. (As above, by Stephy Renee.)

Here's how to do it on ChatGPT:

    • Pull up prompt window
    • Upload avatar photo
    • Prompt: Create an image that looks like a selfie taken with an iPhone. There should be no clear subject or specific composition, just a casual, unintentional snapshot. The image should be slightly blurry and lit evenly by streetlights. The aspect ratio should be 9:16. It must not look AI-generated, but rather like it was taken by a real person.

The results are fairly viral all over Facebook (and a bit on Instagram). Here's a couple other favorites:
