  • Cajsa’s SL Flickr Pick: Magdalena Makes Her Avatar Look Like Classic Celebrities Then Glamorously Photographs Them

Magdalena has one of the most amazing streams in which she does what look to be hand-made avatar homages to classic entertainers from the 1920s forward. For example, here is James Dean, the iconic actor who defined cool for more than a generation. She also includes quotes from the artists she presents. She does a good job with Dean. Just think of how jeans, a tee, and a leather motorcycle jacket has been the outfit for cool ever since Dean burned through the screen. He was the epitome of cool and he continues to be.

  • New for Patreon Subscibers: Shocking Stats on What Mesh Artist & Riggers Make from Subcontracting in Second Life

    July 22, 2025

    SL shadow mesh subcontractor earnings

    New for Patreon subscribers:

I hesitated before using the word "shocking" in this post title, but I'm genuinely surprised that a strong majority of respondents earn $15/hour or less from their SL mesh work. Also, that the highest end was $25-49/hour, reached by 17%.

In this survey, mesh riggers report making more on average, but surprisingly not much more.

With pay rates so tight, also worth reading advice from shadow meshers, such as:

"Get 1/2 the money up front. Don’t allow add-ons and major changes to the original request. Do not send the files until you are paid in full. If they require changes that weren’t in the original request, those happen after you’re finished for another negotiated price."

Subscribe to the read the rest here — and a very interesting guest post by a top mesh artist I'll be running later this week.

  • Cajsa’s SL Flickr Pick: Beautifully Composed Images of Landscapes, Romance, and Drama by Yumi Sere

    ::: At Bella's Lullaby :::

Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting

Yumi Sere posted this fantastic picture last year. I forget how I came across it, but I love it. It’s so compelling even though, at first glance, you might think it’s breaking all the rules of composition with that sheep up near the top. But the sheep is a third of the way from the right side, so the sheep follows the Rule of Thirds and let me explain how the grass and flowers do, too, even though they leave very little room for sky. The bottom third of the picture is purely grass. The middle third is flowers, and the top third is the sky, sheep, and grass. There are thirds, just not the way we are used to seeing them.

  • Deadpool Dance-onomics: Surprising Revenue Details from Top Seller of RL Mocap Animations in Second Life

    July 18, 2025

Since we were recently talking about the harsh economics of shadow meshing in the Second Life economy, here's a look at another SL market with some impressive revenue numbers: Premium mocap animations.

Paragon, a Los Angeles-based mocap studio, has been creating and selling RL mocap dances in Second Life for over five years. (Marketplace page here.) That includes the excellent dorkiness in the video above: Deadpool's dance from the opening of Deadpool & Wolverine, a motion capture of dancer Nick Pauley AKA Dancepool, who actually performed it in place of Ryan Reynolds. (Currently selling for L$300 to L$330, click here to get the Deadpool dance from the Mount Paragon sim.)

Pauley himself is a top dance pro and social media influencer, while the mocap process is time consuming and expensive, so I was curious how the economics here worked. Can an SL merchant really make a profit from real life mocaps that sell for the L$ equivalent of less than $2?

Paragon Owner/Producer Jon Nakagawa gave me a full run-down:

  • WATCH: 11 Players in VR Rigs Re-Enact Church Gunfight from Kingsman in VRChat in Real Time! Here’s How They Shot It & Other Fight Scenes.

    July 17, 2025

If you've seen the hit movie Kingsman, you'll remember the amazingly choreographed church gunfight between dozens of combatants which plays out in a single, deranged take. (Watch here.) Now watch a segment of that scene recreated in VRChat with eleven people in real time, wearing Star Wars-themed avatars. ("I promised the person who was leading it as our MC that we'd make it Star Wars themed for Star Wars day," the director explains to me.)

It's hard for me to process how impressive this is. To shoot it, each of these eleven players had to log in from around the world, perform separately in full-body VR rigs, and somehow, while hundreds or thousands of miles apart, still coordinate this group choreography that requires split second timing.

The director is "Legend50210" (let's call him Legend for short), who back in 2022, created and starred in this cool machinima shot in VRChat, with the fight scenes recorded in a full VR rig. Since then, Legend has continued building on his practice to turn VRChat into a platform for making machinima — and has also turned his SYNC Studios into a VRChat community of like-minded players/machinma makers:

  • Cajsa’s Choices: Amazing Shots of Second Life-Based Superman From “It’s a Bird…” to a Bathroom Break

    July 17, 2025

Mr. Royal was inspired by the recently released Superman movie to create this spectacular “Is it a bird…” It seems very true to what the movie seems to be. His Superman’s hair is not perfect but slightly mussed, as though today’s challenges are tougher than before. I haven’t seen the film, but there seem to be a lot of supervillains and, in the end, perhaps the toughest conflict of all, the culture war.

Royal’s Superman was so good, I was curious to see what other people were inspired to create..

Monument is a new VRChat world that's obsessed me more than any other community project since someone built Jorge Luis Borges' infinite library in the metaverse platform. I'm hoping to get in touch with the creator, Sylan Troh, but you should definitely visit before then — here's the world's web page.

  • Guess What Major Tech Company Looked to Be Interested in Buying Linden Lab / Second Life

    July 16, 2025

Cory Ondrejka Linden Lab blogSecond Life co-founder Cory Ondrejka has gone back to blogging memories from his long career in tech, and just casually dropped a nugget of SL history that's new to me. Back in 2005 / 2006, a top tech company seemed seriously interested in buying Linden Lab / Second Life. Can you guess who that could have been?

No, not Apple, though there were rumors after an Apple Store "appeared" in SL (which turned out to be an impressive fan-made stunt), nor Google, though there was some serious speculation, after rumors emerged that they were building a virtual world (which turned out to be a half-ass attempt called Lively).

    So, who?

    Tell us, Cory:

  • Cajsa’s Second Life Flickr Picks: Incredibly Naturalistic Photos from Someone Named YO!

YO! has such an exciting, naturalistic photostream. Like this picture of her leaning forward and looking into the distance as though she has heard some distant sound like maybe the piercing cry of an eagle or the haunting laughter of a loon at night. The picture is aged and damaged by time and it seems that there might be a mountain in the distance, as though she is outdoors. There is a sense of urgency in the way she holds her body. I can think of so many stories.
