Katie Horten posted this great pic of her in a field with some sheep and a rather old tractor. I love the bluish tinge to this picture.
I was thinking about tractors today because they had a big tractor pull at the county fair and my niece’s granddaughter, my great-grandniece, competed. She is still in high school and was the youngest competitor. She was also the only female competitor. And she came in first place! I am so crazy proud. Anyway, that led me to looking at the tractors of Second Life and I have to report that most residents do not take good care of their tractors, leaving them out in the field to rust. Where are the Quonset huts to park them in?

Declan McGregor’s “Country Boy Can Survive” is not just homage to a song but to a way of life that is disappearing. Family farms are being absorbed into corporate farms, but also, the whole concept of fixing things for yourself is fast disappearing.
My dad was a mechanic who preferred to work on farm equipment, tractors, combines, cultivators, and the like. But if he were around today, by the way, he would not be allowed to work on most modern machinery. The iconic John Deere tractor can only be repaired by John Deere. If you can’t fix it, do you really own it? Tractor owners are fighting for the right to repair and I hope they win.
Sandy Phipps created the very painterly “Red Tractor” that just blows me away. It makes me think of the wonderful Hudson River School. This is also masterly composition with beautiful use of the Rule of Threes. I just love everything about this pic.

It’s interesting how many of Second Life’s tractors are not being well-cared for. After all, a tractor can cost from $30 to $230K. Would you set $230,000 out in the snow and rain? Of course, tractors parked in an equipment garage or Quonset doesn’t make as picturesque a piece of art. So I guess we should all be grateful that Second Life farmers don’t take care of their tractors.
