I'm late to this party, but thanks to Julian of the Virtual Worlds Museum for flagging this to me:

AltspaceVR, once a Microsoft-owned social VR platform with a pretty active community before the plug was pulled in 2023, is attempting a rebirth:

My name is Danny Mac, and I’m the owner, CEO and Refounder of AltspaceVR. After Microsoft sunset the platform and dissolved the business, I was able to reclaim the marks and form a new company dedicated to bringing this incredible community space back and ensuring it's here to stay.

To be clear, Altspace was never just a platform or a product to me. It was always about the community, the vibe, and the creativity. The connections that happened because a safe, non-toxic space existed for them to happen in.

That’s my north star moving forward, to rebuild AltspaceVR as a community-first, open source platform, with sustainable models to keep it alive for good.

Here's the revival website to get involved. I'm reaching out to Mr. Mac and hope to get more info when I can.

    You can’t keep a good metaverse down. One of the earliest 3D VRML worlds I was a part of was Cybertown. It’s back and thriving. For anyone that’s interested:

    AltSpace was NOT thriving. It had 5 users on a good day.
    Look at the site now and the points that they make.
    Does it sound exciting to anyone but the same typical ‘woke’ group of pandering idiots who want to continue deluding themselves that this platform would go anywhere?
    The website reads like a snore fest
    “redefining whats possible in social vr’ hokay buddy zzz
    “building community wealth” hokay buddy zzzz
    “a safe and social space for all” oh oh we know where that leads
    “Building Community Wealth & A Decentralized Organization” lets say it twice in two sections.. ok communism
    Boring. Next

    Please bring back Altspace!! I loved meeting people, having fun building and decorating. It was cathartic for me.

    Altspace was more than an app to me it was a home and vacation it means so much to me when I first got vr I was scared to speak and then I met a few people in that app and my whole aspect of changed and I was hosting and co hosting events helping other people organize events and I was love meeting people and they became my family and I was going through a lot I was losing a lot of irl family I lost 5 family members 24 days of each other and Altspace was where my outlet was to get worlds and decorate I would sit in my worlds for hours and listen to music and just zone out I would b so excited to see our home come back to life and to see where it can go from there and see all the new things that will happen I would help my creative friends help them decorate or they ask my opinions omg I just want this to come back

    Why did the other recent comments disappear? Anyway, Danny hasn’t been responding to message for months and now his website for the project has been down for a week. He isn’t even responding to messages from the developers at Basis. The project is dead.
