Ellen Saint shoots landscapes that are warm and inviting. Take “So Tangled in the Wild” with the field of Scotch broom brightening the landscape, brighter and bolder than the sky. In an odd way, this picture is enhanced by what you don’t see. Right behind what I hope is a house because it’s lovely and the view is spectacular, we can see a lighthouse, so we know right over the crest of that hill is the ocean. We don’t see it but we know it’s there and so we know that whoever lives in that house is a very lucky person, indeed.

“Summer Breeze” captures this feeling of nostalgia for simpler times when bikes were bikes and six books weighed a few pounds instead of taking a few megabytes. The basket of flowers, the stack of books, the old-fashioned clown-style bike horn all evoke a past many people long for, especially if they would not be on the downside of power back then. However, looking closely you can see the bike has hand brakes, not coaster breaks, so it’s not really that old after all.

“The Turn Me” comes from the song by Radiohead which she quotes. “In the deepest ocean / The bottom of the sea / Your eyes / They turn me” This seems so perfect for this picture that makes the sky reflected in the motionless water seem almost like an eye, looking back at us. I wonder what they see. [Click here to visit]
Ellen Saint takes lovely pictures of herself and her loved ones. She catches moments of spontaneous enjoyment and carefully-executed portraits and nudes. Still, I found myself drawn to her landscapes perhaps because she does so few of them. They stand out in the stream. I like that she experiments with post-processing from time to time, like this blurred face. She’s having fun in Second Life and it shows.
