Catchafire Shilova is no longer active on Flickr, but I only discovered her today, so she is still new to me. Her pictures are so original and surreal, it would be a shame not to highlight them just because they are old. In “Scarcity Generation” we have Mickey and Minnie figures in punk tartans and safety pins. There’s blood on her hands and feet, she’s holding a knife, has Shilova killed Minnie? Is the answer in the linked song “There Will Be No Next Time?”

“Les Mambo des Cha-Cha-Chats” is a surreal play on the portmanteau cha-cha-chats which clearly means salsa-dancing cats. The bowler hats are in honor of René Magritte as is the cheery sky through the window. The humor and sly intelligence behind this picture is thrilling. (Inspired by Buena Vista Social Club.)
Oh, wow! Inspired by Yves Montand’s “A Bicycletta” this picture is called “Monocular biciklanto” and seems to channel Magritte as well. I love it’s simplicity in form and complexity in thought. I see pictures like this and they make perfect sense, but I can’t help but wonder how people think of them. There’s a special little imagination lobe, I think.
Catchafire Shilova’s photostream is just 154 pictures and she has not been active since 2017, but her photostream is an amazing journey of the imagination. Not one of her pics is ordinary.
