Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
“Stronger Than It Seems” is a stunning “Is it life or is it Second Life?” photo that really needs her labeling it SL by telling us she took it in the virtual world location called North and adding it to SL groups on Flickr. The fog and depth of field help create that sense of reality. That it is in black and white also helps. Perhaps it is our association of it with archival documentary and artistic photography or perhaps it hides a lot. I just marvel at how our trees have grown since the days they were a few interlocking alpha prims like a Christmas Tree stand.
Junn focuses on black and white, but the next picture is a bold color experiment.
“Red” is red at its most lurid, a monochromatic picture of Asian street complete with paper lanterns. There is a ball-joint avatar or mannequin at a counter in a hip-cocked provocative pose and another sitting in a chair. There is an avatar who seems to be the subject, but her pose seems uncertain and insecure or is it not the pose but the threatening red?

This untitled picture is another stunner. The power lines give us leading lines until they are lost in the fog. The avatar is in shadow, so much so that depending on how you look at it, the avatar could be facing either direction. How does the perceived orientation of the avatar affect the mood of the picture? Are they looking forward toward the light or toward the viewed and into the shadows?
I love Junn’s work. She is disciplined in her use of color and experiments. She placed “Red” in a group devoted to “Color Experiments in Second Life” I have featured her before, a year ago. It seems that in that time she has become even more deliberate about how she thinks about color.
